Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday said that he was happy that the people of Jharkhand voted by keeping in mind the issues they faced in their everyday lives.

“We formed an alliance in Jharkhand and had great coordination. We fought the elections based on people’s issues. I am happy that the people there voted by keeping in mind the issues faced by them in their everyday lives,” Tejashwi Yadav told reporters.

Tejashwi Yadav was among the opposition leaders who attended the swearing-in ceremony of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren at the Mohrabadi Ground in Ranchi.

In a show of strength by the opposition parties, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) leader Sharad Yadav were among the senior leaders who graced the occasion.

Tejashwi Yadav accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading hatred amongst communities and took on the party over issues like inflation and unemployment.

“We are seeing that the country is in a state of an undeclared emergency. Hatred is being spread. Inflation is rising, unemployment has increased and GDP is falling. When Jharkhand was carved out from Bihar 19 years ago, BJP was in power for 16 years and had the opportunity to take the state to great heights. Instead, Jharkhand is lagging behind today,” Tejashwi Yadav said.

Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD, which fought the Jharkhand Assembly elections in alliance with Congress and JMM, won a comfortable majority by securing 47 seats in the 81-member house.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) won 30 seats, while Congress and RJD garnered 16 and one seat respectively.

Bare-chested supporters of the Rashtriya Janata Dal blocked highways using buffaloes, sat on railway tracks and shouted slogans on Saturday to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) in at least two places in Bihar.

Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD, which has given the call for a Bihar Bandh against the citizenship act, has appealed to the people of the state to participate in the shutdown.

“In protest against CAA and NRC, the RJD will be leading a Bihar bandh on December 21. On its eve, the party carried a torch rally in all districts to give a call for a peaceful protest,” the former deputy chief minister had tweeted on Friday. 

The RJD’s workers and supporters protested bare chest as they shouted against Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and the central government in Darbhanga. They blocked the highway by burning tyres and also protested at the railway line and disrupted the movement of trains.

In Vaishali, the RJD’s workers blocked the highway with the help of buffaloes.

As Tejashwi Yadav opposed the proposed NRC, he said people would not be able to prove their identity if it is implemented, as their identity documents often get washed away in the floods in the state.

“In Bihar, people’s documents flow away with floodwaters. How can they prove their identity?” Yadav had asked.

Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party and member of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, had signalled his opposition to an NRC exercise.

He is the first chief minister of an NDA-ruled state to shut its doors on the citizens’ register that would be crucial to the BJP-led national coalition delivering on its promise to expel infiltrators.

However, his party had voted in favour of the controversial changes in the citizenship act that allows the government to give citizenship to minorities from three Muslim countries Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Protests have intensified in various parts of the country after CAA was enacted on December 12.

Opposition parties and civil society say the law is unconstitutional because it links faith to citizenship and discriminatory because it omits Islam.

Top opposition leaders In Bihar, including RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, have been booked in connection with the bandh organised in Bihar on the previous day in protest against the amended Citizenship Act and a proposed countrywide National Register for Citizens (NRC), police said on Sunday.

According to a release issued by the Patna Police, Yadav, a former deputy chief minister and currently the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, is among 27 people mentioned by name in addition to “hundreds of unnamed ones” against whom an FIR was lodged late Saturday night at the Kotwali police station.

Prominent among those named are Rashtriya Lok Samata Party chief and former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha, RJD leaders Shivanand Tiwari (national vice-president, former state minister and ex-MP) Abdul Bari Siddiqui (MLA), Jagadanand Singh (state president and former MP) and Bhai Virendra (MLA), Congress president and MLC Madan Mohan Jha and MLAs Poonam Paswan and Shakil Ahmad.

All the accused have been booked for “staging a demonstration at the Dak Bungalow crossing without any permission from the authority, raising slogans and disrupting vehicular traffic”, the release said.

They have been booked under the Indian Penal Code Sections 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by government servant), 341 (wrongful restraint), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505 (public mischief) and the Loudspeaker Act.

In addition, cases have been slapped on the aforementioned counts against CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar and controversial politician Pappu Yadav who took part in the bandh organised by the Left parties on Thursday, Superintendent of Police, City, Vinay Tiwari said.

Besides, FIRs have been lodged against unidentified persons by journalists Prakash Singh of Republic TV and photojournalist Dinesh Kumar of Dainik Bhaskar, who have alleged that they were assaulted by bandh supporters on Saturday, the release added.

PATNA: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav took a jibe at Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Monday, reminding of the “khela” (play) enacted in Bihar a couple of years ago in the that helped the BJP achieve power despite having lost the mandate.

Mr Yadav added that had his party joined hands with the BJP, Sushil Modi would have still been the deputy but serving under “a Chief Minister of our party.”

As Mr Yadav began speaking about alleged attempts by the Nitish Kumar government to “muzzle the oppositions voice”, he turned towards Sushil Modi and said, “Modi-ji says many fine things happen in the night. Bihar too has seen such a khela, when a government was formed in the thick of the night”.

Mr Yadav was referring to a tweet by Mr Modi in which he had defended his party against criticism from the opposition over the developments in Maharashtra.

“Many big things have happened in the thick of night. Independence was achieved and the Union Jack was lowered at midnight,” Mr Modi had tweeted in Hindi.

Mr Yadav’s insinuation was about the developments that took place in Bihar in July, 2017 when Nitish Kumar resigned, disapproving of the RJDs refusal to heed demands for his resignation in the backdrop of a money laundering case.

Mr Kumar sprung a surprise less than 24 hours later when he was sworn in as Chief Minister again as he staked claim to form a new government with the support of BJP, paving way for Mr Modi’s return as deputy, four years after he was stripped of the post as Mr Kumar snapped ties with the BJP.

Mr Yadav’s tongue-in-cheek remark was, however, drowned out in the shouting of slogans by agitated members which prompted Speaker Vijay Kumar Chaudhary to adjourn the proceedings till

Mr Yadav said his party too had the option of tying up with the BJP and retaining power but decided otherwise on account of ideological commitments.

“It seems to have become the BJPs style of functioning. We saw similar things happening in Goa. As the matter is sub judice, I would not like to say much about Maharashtra but wait for the Supreme Courts verdict,” he said.

Incidentally, Mr Modi had claimed during the Lok Sabha polls this year that Mr Kumar’s exit from the grand alliance had come months after a meeting Lalu Yadav had with the late Union minister Arun Jaitley.

PATNA: The five-member Grand Alliance along with the Left parties on Wednesday took out protest march in Patna against “anti-people” policies of both Central and the state governments, though RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav gave the stir a miss.

RJD, the major constituent of the opposition grouping in Bihar, however, said Mr Yadav could not participate in the “Aakrosh march” because of his engagements in the ensuing Jharkhand polls and also legal matters.

RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha, who played a pivotal role in organising the march on behalf of alliance, had on Tuesday claimed that all the prominent leaders of the grouping will take part in the march.

Apart from Mr Kushwaha,former chief minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) president Jitan Ram Manjhi, Bihar Congress president Madan Mohan Jha and Vikassheel Insan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahni attended the march in Patna which ended at Collectorate after starting from Gandhi Maidan.

CPI state secretary Satya Narayan Singh and CPI(M) leader Arun Mishra took part in the agitation along with their partymen.

The alliance leaders, however, could not give their memorandum to District Magistrate Kumar Ravi as he was not present in the office and a junior officer was sent to receive it.

The leaders decided not to give memorandum to any other officer than the DM as it was an “insult” to them. 

The five-parties alliance- comprising RJD, Congress, RLSP, HAM(S) and VIP- held peaceful protest march at all the district headquarters town of the state during the day. 

Asked if he was leading the march, Mr Kushwaha, who is a former union minister of state, said “its not like that. This is neither Mr Kushwaha’s programme nor that of my party. It is an agitation programme of all the Grand Alliance partners and left parties…There is no question of any particular individual leading the march.”

Manjhi, whose party had earlier said that it would not join the march, attended it.

The HAM chief said that he had said that he would not be part of the march because of some confusion. 

Manjhi, however, reiterated his demand for forming coordination committee for taking decisions and better functioning of the grand alliance.

“Our demand for coordination committee is absolutely legitimate. I have given a December target (deadline) for the formation of the committee,” Manjhi said.

The HAM president, however, refused to comment on Tejashwi Yadav’s absence from the march, saying that “I have nothing to say on it. Tejashwi may not have come because of his own reasons.”

RJD resorted to tokenism by sending its spokesman Mrityunjay Tiwary to the agitation in the state capital. 

Asked why is Tejashwi Yadav not present in the march, Tiwary said he could not participate in the stir as he was engaged with his legal battles and ensuing assembly polls in Jharkhand.

He further said RJD’s state unit chief Ram Chandra Purvey was busy in a party’s crucial meeting with regard to its organisational polls.
