Jharkhand: JVM Chief Babulal Marandi Expels Two MLAs, Paves Way For Party’s Merger With BJP In State

Amid moves to merge with the BJP, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha chief Babulal Marandi has expelled MLA Pradeep Yadav from the party on the charges of anti-party activities.

Yadav is the second legislator to be expelled from the party.

“Pradeep Yadav was issued a show cause notice and he was asked to respond within 48 hours. However, as he failed to respond to the notice within the stipulated time, therefore, he has been sacked from the party following the directions of party supremo Babulal Marandi,” said principal general secretary of the party Abhay Singh.

On 4 February, the party had issued a show cause notice to Poriyhaat MLA Pradeep Yadav for certain statements made by him which the party said were anti-party.

Yadav has also been accused of making comments against Marandi.

The JVM-P had on January 21 sacked its Mandar legislator Bandhu Tirkey after accusing him of being involved in anti-party activities. Bandhu too was served a show cause notice.

The action against both the legislators is being seen as another step taken by the party on its path to merge with the BJP.

In the Assembly elections, the JVM-P had won three seats, which included Babulal Marandi, Pradeep Yadav and Bandhu Tirkey.

Both Yadav and Tirkey, according to the party sources, were against the merger with the BJP.

The JVM-P has called a meeting of the party leaders on 11 February. According to party sources, the merger proposal would be discussed in this meeting.

Marandi was the first Chief Minister of the BJP-led state government in Jharkhand. He quit the BJP in 2006 and formed the JVM-P.

Nearly a month after joining hands with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress to be part of the Hemant Soren-led government in Jharkhand, the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) (JVM) today walked out of the alliance and accused the Congress of trying to poach its MLAs.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, JVM president Babulal Marandi said the Congress, which is part of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand, is trying to break the JVM.

The letter read: “Our party Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) had on December 24, 2019, gave a letter of unconditional support to the government under your (Hemant Soren) leadership. But the Congress, which is a part of the UPA, is trying to break our MLAs, which the newspapers have published prominently today. In this context, our party has reviewed its support and decided to withdraw support to the UPA government under your leadership.”

This announcement came a day after two JVM MLAs-Pradip Yadav and Bandhu Tirkey-met Congress president Sonia Gandhi, fuelling speculations that they are set to join the Congress. The two also met Rahul Gandhi and Congress Jharkhand in-charge RPN Singh.

The JVM had won three seats in the recently held Jharkhand assembly election. If Yadav and Tirkey join Congress, Marandi will be the lone JVM MLA in Jharkhand.

Speculations are also rife that the JVM may merge with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the main opposition party in the state at present.

However, JVM’s withdrawing support will not have any impact on the government as it has 47 MLAs in the 81-member house.

“Our party has extended support to the Hemant Soren government. But its coalition partner, Congress is attempting to poach our MLAs. In view of that, the party has decided to withdraw its support,” JVM general secretary Saroj Singh told reporters in Ranchi.

He said the party has also decided to remove Pradip Yadav as the legislature party leader in the state assembly and sent a letter to the Speaker in this connection.

On the two MLAs meeting Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Congress spokesman Alok Kumar Dubey told PTI, “The two leaders got the blessings of our senior leaders. They are welcome to join the party.”

“After consultations with Jharkhand Congress president Rameshwar Oraon and CLP leader Alamgir Alam further actions will set in motion,” he said.

While Tirkey, MLA from Mandar in Ranchi district, was expelled by the party on Tuesday last, Yadav, elected from Poreyahat in Godda district, is still its leader.

The development has come at a time when speculation is rife in the media that JVM-P may merge with the saffron party and Marandi could be named as new leader of the BJP legislature party in the Jharkhand assembly.

Significantly, the 25-member BJP legislature party has not yet named its leader.

The JVM, however, has denied the media reports that the party was heading to merge with the BJP.

s Jharkhand is bracing up for the assembly polls towards the end of the year, political parties have already intensified their campaign. It is going to be NDA, led by BJP, versus others in the state.

However the picture is still grey as to whether the allies of opposition will manage to come on a common platform.

The Congress is yet to take a call in the matter.

It is not known whether the party is interested in a pre-poll alliance with all the allies who are against the BJP.

There has been a change of guard and five working presidents were nominated to bring back the party on track which is loosing it’s base in the state.

However party spokesperson Lal Kishore Nath Shahdeo has accepted that talks are on with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

In the prevailing political condition, other allies of opposition have started dialogue among themselves to reportedly forge a formidable alliance to take on the BJP which is riding high on the Modi wave. The saffron party is brimming with confidence after an emphatic win on 12 out of 14 seats in the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

In what is being seen as an effort to break ice two stalwarts of Jharkhand, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) supremo and the first chief minister of the state Babulal Marandi and former chief minister Hemant Soren met at Dhanbad circuit house for more than 25 minutes in a closed door meeting.

Both of them were visibly thrilled post the meeting. Babulal Marandi said that there was nothing to hide. He admitted that he was not against an alliance of like-minded parties.

Hemant Soren reiterated the same. There was no discussion over seat-sharing, Soren said, but when the time comes, everything will be sorted and disclosed to the media.

All is well, Soren said, while dropping a hint that RJD, JMM and JVM could explore the possibilities of contesting the elections under an umbrella.

In 2014, Congress had thrown it’s hat with RJD and JDU in the electoral fray but JMM and JVM had contested on their own.

The major issue which emerges in alliances is seat-sharing. This was the core reason why JMM and the Congress had contested 2009 and 2014 assembly polls without an alliance.

Now, the allies are daring to take on the BJP and whether they will see eye to eye with their partners remains to be seen.

Highly placed sources said that even RJD wants 12 seats and the other allies are opposed to it, citing reasons that they don’t deserve the number of seats they are asking.

Congress wants more seats in Santhal where JMM candidate had won. The allies are headed for a fight over seat-sharing before going to polls. It would be interesting to see who wins the race.Al
