No parking charge for pick-and-drop vehicles at airport.

Source – dailypioneer.com

Pick-and-drop vehicles will be freed from parking charges at the Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi soon, Airport Director Vinod Sharma said on Wednesday, adding that the decision was officially announced at the meeting of the Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) recently.

However, Sharma added that the vehicles will have to drop or pick passengers and leave within a stipulated period of time in order to avoid parking charges. “We do not wish to charge any money from the pick-and-drop vehicles, but we have to fix a maximum time for which the vehicles can stay on the airport premises without paying for parking as no upper limit on the free-parking-period will cause overcrowding of vehicles,” Sharma said.

The vehicles, he added, will be given three to four minutes for dropping or picking up passengers, so the free-parking period will be around five minutes. On Tuesday, an AAC meeting was presided over by Ranchi MP Sanjay Seth and attended by Rajya Sabha MP Mahesh Poddar, who has been an active member of the committee. Hatia legislator Navin Jaiswal also attended the meeting.

Besides taking the decision of relieving pick-and-drop vehicles from parking charges, the AAC also decided to use funds from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) treasury of the airport to rehabilitate the villagers who had lost land due to construction and expansion of the airport and beautify the villages surrounding the airport.

Poddar highlighted loopholes in the parking arrangements at the Ranchi airport and said that the airport needs to fix all the anomalies in the system in order to leave a good impression on visitors. “The visitors coming from other cities and countries get the first impression of the city by seeing the arrangements at the airport. Any mismanagement at the airport leaves a bad impression,” said Poddar.

The Birsa Munda Airport is fast growing in terms of connectivity with other cities. The largest airport in Jharkhand already has 30 flights connecting Ranchi to important cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The airport also has an international bay, but is yet to get any international flights. The increasing passenger traffic in Ranchi demands for better facilities and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) is consistently working on finding new ways to enhance the travel experience of passengers, said airport officials.

Meanwhile, the airport authorities here have also floated tenders for restaurants and bar in the airport premises. Besides, several shops and showrooms have come up in the airport terminals in order to provide entertainment, refreshment and quality shopping experience to passengers here.

65-year-old woman killed after being branded ‘witch’ in Jharkhand: Cops

Source – hindustantimes.com

A 65-year-old woman suspected of practising witchcraft was beaten to death by a man in Jharkhand’s Simedga district, days after a report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said the state recorded the highest number of such killings in India in 2018.

Police said 22-year-old Manoj Bilung allegedly killed Ashrita Bilung with sticks after branding her a witch on Friday, a day before his wedding at Sarkhutoli village under Pakartand police station, around 140km from capital Ranchi.

“Suspecting Ashrita of practising black magic, Manoj went to her house in the village on Friday midnight and beat her to death. This is what Manoj said during interrogation,” Pakartand police station in-charge Hiralal Mahto said.

Mahto said Manoj was arrested on Saturday and sent to jail on Sunday.

Despite a drop in witch-hunt murder cases in Jharkhand, annual figures released by NCRB last Wednesday show the tribal state witnessed the highest number of such killings in the country in 2018 at 18.

The country witnessed 63 such murders in 2018. Madhya Pradesh recorded 10 witch-hunt murders, Andhra Pradesh nine, Chhattisgarh eight and Odisha saw five such killings in 2018, as per NCRB.

An analysis of NCRB’s data since 2001 shows 560 women were lynched in Jharkhand after being branded witches between 2001 and 2018. The state saw the highest or 54 witch-hunting murders in 2013, 52 in 2008 and 50 in 2007.

Jharkhand has seen a decline in such killings since 2014 when 47 women were lynched, which dropped to 32 in 2015, 27 in 2016, 19 in 2017 and 18 in 2018.

Four people in their 60s, including two women, were killed in July last year after around a dozen angry villagers dragged them out of their houses and attacked them with sticks and sharp weapons while accusing them of practising witchcraft at Siskari village in Gumla district.

Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are the worst affected states of the social evil. Hundreds of women have been persecuted, tortured and killed after being branded as witches in the past few decades in these four states.

Corruption charges baseless, ready for any probe: Ex Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das.

Source – avenuemail.in

Ranchi, Jan 10: Former Chief Minister Raghubar Das Friday challenged Hemant Soren government to get allegations of corruption against him probed by any agency. He termed the allegations as baseless.

Replying to allegations of corruption worth Rs 100 crore leveled against him by Jan Sabha’s Pankaj Kumar Yadav, Das said, “Momentum Jharkhand Global Investors’ Summit brought Jharkhand prominently on the world map. Investors all over the world came to know about Jharkhand’s suitability as an investment destination. They came to know about the ease of doing business in the state, availability of resources and basic infrastructure.”

Das spoke while attending a programme organized in the state Capital to pay tributes to Justice LPN Shahdeo. He said there was no scam in Momentum Jharkhand.

“Momentum Jharkhand was organized with full transparency. Many companies invested in Jharkhand after the Global Summit. Many youths of the state got employment after the event. Anyone can complain. Now it’s their (JMM’s) government. They can get the allegations investigated. I have nothing to worry about,” said the former CM.

Yadav, the Jan Sabha functionary, lodged a complaint against Das with the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) yesterday. He also accused former Jharkhand Chief Secretary Raj Bala Verma, former Principal Secretary to CM Sunil Kumar Barnwal and several other state bureaucrats of involvement in the scam and demanded a thorough probe.

Pappu Yadav lauds Hyderabad cops, promises to reward Bihar police for similar encounter.

Source – indiatoday.in

Former MP and convener of Jan Adhikar Party Pappu Yadav of Friday launded Hyderbad police for gunning down four alleged rape accused in the gangrape and murder of a doctor and announced that he will reward the Bihar Police if they carry a similar operation in pending rape case in the state.

Backing the killing of the alleged rape accused in Hyderbad, the former Bihar MP said that he will give a reward of Rs 50,000 to each member of the police team, which killed the rape accused early on Friday morning.

“I will reward every police personnel who was part of the encounter team with Rs 50,000. Questions can be raised over the manner of the encounter but not over the intention,” said Pappu Yadav.

Pappu Yadav also lashed out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and questioned him whether the UP police will dare to encounter alleged rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and Swami Chinmayanand, former Union Minister of State for Home.

“Will Uttar Pradesh chief minister take a lesson from what Hyderabad [police] has done? Will Yogi Adityanath dare to encounter Swami Chinmayanand and Kuldeep Singh Sengar who are accused of rape?” the former MP asked.

Pappu Yadav also hit out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and declared that he would reward Bihar police with Rs 5 lacs if they eliminated alleged rape accused in Buxar and Samastipur rape case.

Pappu Yadav said that Hyderabad encounter would act as a deterrent against criminals.

Girl raped, shot dead and burnt in Bihar’s Buxar: Police.

Source – hindustantimes.com

A minor girl was shot dead and burnt by unidentified men on Monday night in Kukdha village in Bihar’s Buxar district, police said.

According to police, the body of the girl, who appears to be around 16 years old, was recovered on Monday morning from a field under Itadhi police station in Buxar, around 150 kilometres from state capital Patna.

Police said that after initial examination doctors suspect the girl was raped.

Upendra Nath Verma, Buxar Superintendent of Police, said the assailants had set the girl on fire by pouring petrol on her. Two empty cartridges have been recovered from the spot.

A forensic team from Patna has been called in and the dog squad has also been pressed into service, said Rakesh Rathi, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Shahabad range.

“Efforts to identify the body are still on. We have sent information to nearby districts to find out details about the deceased. Since the post-mortem report is yet to come, we cannot say if it was a rape,” he added.

The incident comes just a week after the rape and murder of a woman veterinarian in Hyderabad. She was raped by four men and burnt to death. The accused have been arrested.

There were protests across the country over the incident. The issue was also raised in Parliament with lawmakers demanding stringent punishment for the accused.

Maharashtra political drama may impact BJP-JDU alliance in Bihar.

Source – indiatoday.in

he breaking of pre-poll alliance between the BJP and the Shiv Sena after the declaration of the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly election results on October 24 has led to some serious mulling over the fate of the BJP and its alliance partners in others states. The concern looks more serious in Bihar where the BJP-JDU combine is in power at present than other states.

Bihar goes to polls in just about 10 months and the breaking up of 30-year-old BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has become the biggest talking point in the state with many speculating what will happen to the BJP-JDU alliance. Barring four years between 2013 and 2017, the JDU and the BJP are alliance partners for 22 years.

JDU president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had severed ties with the BJP after it became clear that then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi would be elevated as the prime ministerial candidate of the NDA for 2014 Lok Sabha election.

Nitish Kumar’s JDU has always donned the cap of the big brother in Bihar since he came to power in 2005 with BJP choosing to remain second fiddle. Though the BJP and the JDU contested equal number of seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections (17-17), it should not be perceived that both parties were at par.

The BJP with 22 MPs in 2014 had to sacrifice five sitting seats to accommodate the JDU, which turned out to be the biggest gainer. It had just two MPs in 2014 and managed to win 16 of the 17 seats in Bihar in 2019.

However, only a few months back, the BJP and the JDU had engaged in massive war of words over who would lead the NDA in the next assembly polls in Bihar. BJP’s Dalit face Sanjay Paswan suggested Nitish Kumar should make way for a BJP chief minister in 2020 and graduate to national politics.

The remarks by Sanjay Paswan left the JDU fuming and the normalcy returned only after Union Home Minister and BJP president Amit Shah said the BJP-JDU alliance in Bihar is “atal” (immovable) and that the Bihar Assembly election will be contested under the leadership of Nitish Kumar.

Amit Shah’s effort to put an end to all sorts of speculation over Nitish Kumar’s role in the NDA for 2020 Bihar Assembly election was seen as the BJP’s inability to gain foothold in the state where it faced a massive defeat in 2015 state polls following split with the JDU.

Though in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP made a clean sweep winning all the 17 seats it contested, the party still believes assembly election is a totally different ball game. The party does not want to risk going alone in the election and prefers to bank of the image of “Sushasan Babu” Nitish Kumar. The combination has worked well for the alliance in 2005 and 2010 when it registered emphatic victories.

However, following the Maharashtra episode, the BJP in Bihar has started targeting the JDU signaling that any move mirroring the Shiv Sena could spell disaster for the regional party.

Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi congratulated Devendra Fadnavis after his Saturday swearing in with a twisted tweet taking a veiled aim at Nitish Kumar too. He said, “Sharad Pawar like Nitish Kumar knew that BJP is more reliable than Congress. Shiv Sena was like RJD. Very difficult to work with party like Shiv Sena or RJD, full of lumpens.”

Sources say, Sushil Modi, considered close to Nitish Kumar, through this tweet obliquely hinted at Bihar chief minister advising him to keep distance from the Congress, which has never appeared averse to Nitish Kumar for his secular credentials. Sushil Kumar Modi also warned Nitish Kumar against allying again with the RJD the way he did in 2015.

Speculation is rife that BJP firebrand leader and Union minister Giriraj Singh’s comments after Fadnavis took oath as Maharshtra chief minister was also aimed at Nitish Kumar. Singh said, “Greed and arrogance invite disaster.”

Lok Janshakti Party leader and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s statement is too being seen as a veiled message to the JDU national president. “Animal which is indecisive whether to go left or right gets killed on the road,” Paswan wrote on Twitter.

The JDU too obliquely criticized BJP for allying with NCP (Ajit Pawar) and relinquishing its ideology for power.

In such circumstances, the bone of contention could be the seat-sharing agreement between the BJP and the JDU. Both parties would be keen to grab a larger piece of the cake. Remember, some seats also have to be given to the LJP, another alliance partner of the NDA in Bihar.

The BJP would be keen to settle for the seat-sharing formula based on the Lok Sabha elections where both parties fought equal number of seats. However, the JDU would want to keep the 2010 formula as the reference point when both parties fought elections together. The JDU contested on 141 seats and BJP on 102.

However, the BJP, in any case, would not want the JDU to fight on more number of seats that itself. This would not only send a message of the JDU being a big brother in the alliance but might also give the JDU an opportunity to dump the BJP post-poll if it wins more than 100 seats in a house of 243. The half way mark in Bihar Assembly is 122.

Interestingly, results of the assembly elections in neighboring Jharkhand may also have a bearing on the BJP-JDU alliance in Bihar. The BJP is fighting the Jharkhand election alone, snapping ties with All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU). If it wins Jharkhand election, it will not only strengthen its position in NDA but will also shield from pressure politics of the alliance partners.
