Patna stinks as municipal workers on strike

PATNA: With heaps of garbage scattered throughout the city, a condition has prevailed in Patna following the strike of workers of Patna Municipal Corporation continuing from last Monday?

Hundreds of workers have gone on strike in support of their demands and are staging dharna at the Maurya Lok.

In Patna, around 700 tonnes of the garbage is produced everyday which is not being lifted and dumped away from the city

The door to door garbage collection has also been affected with no one of PMC turning in for duty.

“As a result of this strike, almost all crossings and isolated places in the city are flooded with heaps of garbage which have started emanating foul smells”, said Shambhu Tewary at Rajendranagar, which had recently witnessed a devastating waterlogging.

On Monday, PMC workers demonstrated in front of the Corporation and threw garbage in a token of strike.

The waste materials of hotels, restaurants and other food zones are lying unmoved with hundreds of cows and other animals assembled thereupon.

Approximately, 4000 daily wage workers associated with the PMC have gone on strike demanding regularisation of their services and other facilities due to them.

They went on strike as soon as a letter was issued by Urban Development and Housing Department to all urban bodies to stop taking services of daily wage workers from February 1.

Chandra Prakash, president of Patna Nagar Nigam staff union, alleged that the government was misleading the workers just by extending deadline of stopping services of workers.

“We will not call off strike unless and until the services are regularised and letter is issued confirming it”, he said.

Locals said that if the strike continues further, Patna will become a stinking city and breakout of epidemic diseases can’t be ruled out.

Violence in Bihar’s Patna, Kaimur and Muzaffarpur during Saraswati idol immersion

More than 12 people, including four policemen, were injured in brick batting and four vehicles were set on fire in the state capital Patna, according to officials.

Violence broke out in three separate districts of Patna, Kaimur and Muzaffarpur in Bihar during processions to immerse the idol of Goddess Saraswati late on Friday, officials said.

Police said the clash started between students of the Patna University and locals in the Lalbagh area as residents allegedly chased them from the spot and they pelted stones at each other during the procession.

Another group of students later started firing and hurled bombs, which led to chaos in the surrounding areas. Bricks and stones were seen scattered on the Ashok Rajpath near Lalbagh after the violence.

Eyewitnesses said students ransacked several tea stalls, coaching institutes and a private eye-hospital during the violence.

The students, on their part, alleged they were attacked by the people of Lalbagh when they had gone to immerse the idol.

They said when students of Minto, Nutan and Jackson hostels reached Lalbagh area, residents started hurling stones and bombs at them. They then retaliated to the attack.

The brawl, which went on for more than two hours, left a sub-inspector, three constables, student Chandra Sekhar and a passersby injured. The injured policemen were admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and others were referred to Nalanda Medical College & Hospital (NMCH).

Inspector general of police (Central Zone) Sanjay Singh, Patna district magistrate Kumar Ravi and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Upendra Sharma rushed to the spot with reinforcement and pacified the crowd. Police also used mild lathicharge to disperse the mob.

IG Sanjay Singh said Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed to keep the situation in control. Sharma said preliminary investigation revealed that students of Minto and Saidpur hostels were involved in the firing and hurling bombs.

Reports from Kaimur said there was tension in a village after a group allegedly pelted stones at an idol, which was said to be damaged. After this, people from two communities indulged in brick batting and firing leading to the injury of a half dozen people.

Sub-divisional officer J Shukla said the situation is under control and additional police force deployed as a precautionary measure.

In Muzaffarpur, tension gripped BRA University after two groups clashed during idol immersion procession when students fired and pelted stones each and other. Many students were injured in the clash.

Muzaffarpur’s SSP Jayant Kant said the incident was a fallout of rivalry between two groups of students.

“Efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the attackers, who managed to escape after the incident,” Kant said.

PATNA/KOLKATA: A 29-year-girl from Bihar’s Chapra district was referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital on Monday with flu-like symptoms. 

Ekta Kumari, who returned from China on January 22, is a student at China’s Tianjin University and had left the country after the coronavirus outbreak.

“She is coherent and not panicking. She wanted to get proper medical care,” said a doctor from Chapra, who did not want to be named.

According to principal health secretary Sanjay Kumar, Ekta reported a mild fever and is suspected to be suffering from the virus, but it hasn’t been confirmed. 

Meanwhile, a researcher from Bengal’s Birbhum district is stranded at a hotel at Wuhan City in Hubei province for four days because of the outbreak. He went to Hubei University on January 21.

“I have been in my hotel room since Friday. I am not allowed to leave. Doctors are visiting me thrice and the hotel authorities are providing food,” said Kazi Arif Islam.

In north Bengal, the state government has set up three checkpoints to scan those who are coming from Nepal.

Over 4,000 chemists go on three-day strike in Patna from January 22.

PATNA: Patna’s famous Govind Mitra road and other adjoining areas, which have the maximum number of retail as well as wholesale chemist shops, wore a deserted look on Wednesday with 4,0000 chemists going on a three-day strike from January 22.

The chemists, who are a part of the Bihar Chemists Association, staged a dharna in support of a charter of their demands including an immediate check on unnecessary harassment on the pretext of completing formalities of work.

However, in a humanitarian move, Prasan K Singh, president of the association, said that medicine shops opened in the premises of hospitals were exempted from participating in the strike.

Chandigarh to have direct connectivity to Goa, Chennai and Patna from March.

Come summer, and Chandigarh will have direct air connectivity to important domestic destinations such as Goa, Patna, Surat and Chennai, taking care of both leisure trips and official business of residents.

The summer flight schedule, which will be enforced at Chandigarh International Airport on March 29, has another good news for travellers — the number of flights are proposed to be doubled from 32 to 65.

However, putting a dampener on this welcome development, the schedule makes no provision for new international flights even as 24×7 operations became a reality at the airport in April last year. Only the two existing flights to the UAE — Sharjah and Dubai — have been listed.

Meanwhile, IndiGo is all set to resume its Dubai flight from February 15. The flight was suspended from December 14 onwards, citing cancellations and delays due to poor visibility.

IndiGo to operate 28 flights

IndiGo is likely to operate 28 of the 65 proposed flights. These include flights to Goa, Chennai, Surat and Patna. The one to Goa will take off past midnight. Even GoAir will operate a flight from Goa to Chandigarh.

Vaneet Sharma, director of a travel agency in Sector 17, said the new destinations will boost pan-India connectivity and also help in boarding international flights from Delhi. “For going to Goa, people first have to go to Delhi, but now it will be easier for them to reach the tourist destination. Moreover, the flight timings are very flexible.”

Sanjeev Vashisht, member of the airport advisory committee, who is also former president of the Mohali Industry Association, said the new destinations, especially Goa and Patna, will boost the tourism sector. “We are hopeful that international flights will start from October this year after installation of the advanced instrument landing system CAT-3,” he said.

Welcoming the direct flight to Patna, Jatinder Pal Singh, senior vice-president, gurdwara coordination committee, Mohali, said: “It was a long-pending demand of residents of our region, as Patna Sahib is the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh. Devotees have to travel by train, which takes a long time. Now, they will be able to take a direct flight.”

New domestic destinations

Flight to and from Goa, Surat and Chennai will begin on March 29.

IndiGo flight 6E-6137 will arrive at Chandigarh from Goa at 6:40am and will depart for Ahmedabad from Chandigarh at 8:10am.

GoAir flight G8-814 will arrive at Chandigarh from Goa at 9:45am and will depart for Surat (G8-815) at 10:15am.

IndiGo flight 6E-6147 will arrive at Chandigarh from Bengaluru at 11pm and the same flight (6E-6144) will depart to Goa after midnight at 12:40am.

IndiGo will also provide direct connectivity between Chandigarh and Chennai. Flight 6E-8052/8053 will arrive at Chandigarh at 1:30pm and depart for Chennai at 2pm.

IndiGo is also going to operate two flights between Chandigarh and Patna from March 30.

The first flight (6E-6141) will arrive from Ahmedabad at 11:35am and then depart for Patna (6E-6148) at 12:05pm.

The second flight (6E-6926) will arrive from Patna at 6:35pm and will resume its return journey at 7:05pm.

All these flights will operate six days a week, from Monday to Saturday.

Main accused in Patna gang-rape case surrenders.

The main accused in the gang-rape case in the state capital on Monday, Vinayak Singh, surrendered before the court on Wednesday. With this, three of the four accused have either been arrested or surrendered before the police.

On January 6, four men had abducted the girl, a BBA student, at gun point and gang-raped her at a vacant flat situated behind a prominent mall in Patna.

The woman was forced to get inside a vehicle at gun point by the accused when she came out of a restaurant at around 6.30 pm (on Monday) under SK Puri police station limits.

She alleged in her FIR that they took her to a vacant flat at an unknown place and repeatedly raped her.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Patna, Upendra Sharma, said the accused Vinayak Singh surrendered before the court due to mounting police pressure.

“The police raided different places to arrest the fourth accused, Sandip Mukhiya,” he added.

Police said they had earlier raided the house of Singh in Hajipur, but could not find him. The police also raided various places in Patna, he added.

Police said as Singh‘s uncle came to know about the incident, he assured the police that he would ensure surrender of his nephew. Singh, however, surrendered to the court, police added.

Police had first arrested Kush. On the basis of Kush’s statement, police arrested Vikas, the second accused.

The girl had lodged a case with the women police station against the four people.

Police officials had said on Tuesday that one of the accused was trying to force the woman into a relationship and was stalking her. The station house officer of the women’s police station, Arti Jaiswal, said preliminary investigation suggested the woman knew the accused.

A case was registered under Sections 376 D (gang-rape), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act, Jaiswal said.

A medical examination of the woman has been conducted and the report is awaited.

This is the second incident of gang-rape in the state capital within a month. On December 13, a Patna University student was allegedly gang-raped by four men.

Two of the accused, including a friend of the woman, surrendered in the court, while two others were arrested from separate places. Taking serious view of the Patna gang-rape in which a student was kidnapped from a mall in the state capital, HAM-S leader Jitan Ram Manjhi said law and order situation has deteriorated in Bihar.

The Congress also pulled up the state government for failure to control crime. Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) chief Madan Mohan Jha on Wednesday said Patna had turned into the crime capital of the country.

Woman Kidnapped from Patna Mall, Raped at Gunpoint.

Patna A woman was allegedly raped at gunpoint after being kidnapped from the parking lot of a mall here on Monday, police officials said.

One person has been arrested out of four persons named in the FIR.

“We have identified the four accused persons who were the (rape) victim’s acquaintances. One man raped the girl while others were part of the conspiracy,” City Superintendent of Police (Central), Patna, Vinay Tiwary told PTI.

Asked whether it is a case of gangrape, Tiwary said, “No, it is not gangrape. It is rape but others were part of the conspiracy.”

One person has been arrested in connection with the case while raids are being conducted to nab other culprits, the City SP said.

The victim’s medical examination was conducted on Tuesday, police sources said.

While talking to reporters, the rape survivor, who had covered her face with a mask, said she was kidnapped by four men at gunpoint from GV Mall on the busy Boring road intersection around 7:30 pm on Monday while she was coming out of an eatery.

As she stepped out of the eatery, one of the four men, who raped her later, told her at gunpoint to sit in his car in the parking lot of the mall.

The four then allegedly took her to a flat located near P&M Mall in Pataliputra colony where one person raped her while three others stood with a pistol, the rape survivor said.

The woman said the four made a video of the incident and threatened to post it on social media.

The woman escaped from their clutches and narrated the incident to her room mate and brother over phone who informed the police.

The woman said the main accused had once come to her residence and had insisted on having physical relations with her.

College student abducted, gang-raped in Patna: Police

A 19-year-old college student was allegedly abducted on gun-point and gang-raped by four persons in Patna late on Monday night, police officials said. Two of the accused have been arrested, officials said.

Police said that the four men abducted the woman in their car at the Boring Road intersection in the state capital on Monday evening. The woman filed a case, naming the four accused, on Tuesday.

“The woman was forced to get inside a vehicle on gun point by the accused when she came out of a restaurant at around 6.30 pm (on Monday) under SK Puri police station limits. She alleged that they took her to a vacant flat at an unknown place and repeatedly raped her there,” the FIR states.

Two of the accused, the woman alleged, threatened her of dire consequences if she reported the crime to the police. Then, she said, the accused took her to the car again, thrashed her and pushed her out of the vehicle near a mall under Patliputra police station area.

The woman filed the case with the Patna’s Women police station on Tuesday.

“Two of the accused have been arrested by police,” said Patna superintendent of police Upendra Sharma. “The spot of the incident has been sealed and a team of forensics experts has collected evidences,” he said.

Police officials said one of the accused was trying to force the woman into a relationship and was stalking her. The station house officer of the women’s police station Arti Jaiswal said that preliminary investigation suggested the woman knew the accused. A case was registered under Sections 376 D (gang-rape), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act, Jaiswal said.

A medical examination of the woman has been conducted and the report is awaited.

“The woman’s statement will be recorded under Section 164 of CrPC before a judicial magistrate on Wednesday and another medical test will be performed at the PMCH,” said the SHO.

SSP Patna said they were scanning the CCTV footage around the Boring Road intersections and the Patliputra area, which, he said, was the likely route the accused took after abducting her.

Shares of Va Tech Wabag rallied over 8 per cent in Thursday’s morning trade after the water treatment player informed the bourses that it secured an order worth Rs 1,187 crore under the Namami Gange Project.

The company on Tuesday said it inked a new project with the Government of Bihar to set up a sustainable wastewater infrastructure programme.

VA Tech has signed the agreement under the National Mission for Clean Ganga to design, build and operate sewage treatment plant of 150 MLD in Digha and Kankarbagh zones of Patna.

Upon completion, the project would ensure a cleaner and healthier ecosystem for over 50 per cent of the population in Patna, the city-based company said in a statement.

The company would be responsible for the sewerage infrastructure in four out of the six zones of Patna (Pahari, Karmalichak, Digha and Kankarbagh).

The agreement was signed between National Mission for Clean Ganga, Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO) and VA Tech WABAG special arm DK Sewage Project.

Commenting on the order win, Varadarajan S, Director and Chief Growth Officer, said “With this repeat order in Bihar, Wabag will now be responsible for sewerage infrastructure in four out of the six zones of Patna, thus testifying the trust reposed by NMCG and BUIDCO on Wabag. This project is an important step in realising the vision of ensuring 100 per cent sewage collection and treatment in Patna. Wabag is already executing projects for BUIDCO in Pahari and Karmalichak. All these projects, on completion, will ensure a cleaner and healthier ecosystem for over 50 per cent of the population of Patna.”

The shares of the company closed 7.24 per cent higher at Rs 193.40 on BSE.
