Jharkhand doctor prescribes pregnancy tests on men, cries foul later

Pregnancy tests for men complaining of stomach pain. This is what a doctor in a government hospital in Jharkhand has prescribed to diagnose two men who came for check-up following stomach problem.

This rather bizarre turn of events has been reported from a referral hospital at Simaria in Chatr district of Jharkhand. Dr Mukesh, serving at the hospital, prescribed pregnancy tests to two young men who had come for a check-up after stomach pain on October 1.

The patients had been taken to the hospital by their family members as they complained of intense stomach pain. The doctor prescribed other tests as well such as for HIV, HBA, HCV, CBC, HH-2 and ANC the last one is a test that is conducted to see if a woman is pregnant or not.

In this case the two patients, who were asked to undergo the ANC test were, 22-year-old Gopal Ganjhu and 26-year-old Kameshwar Ganjhu — to remind again, both are men.

When Gopal and Kameshwar visited the pathological lab of the hospital, the attending doctor was bewildered and told the patients that the ANC is done on women to check pregnancy. The doctor expressed surprise that the consulting doctor prescribed this test on two men.

The two men then went back to their village and told the fellow villagers. Soon, the word spread with amusement.

On his part, Dr Mukesh denied prescribing ANC test on two men when he was asked about the claim made by Gopal and Kameshwar. He cried foul claiming a conspiracy hatched to defame him.

He said, “This is not true. This is an effort to defame me. Those tests could have been added by overwriting.” However, this strange case has become a subject of great interest in this Jharkhand town

Chakardharpur to become new district by February: Jharkhand CM

Jamshedpur, Oct. 13: During his whirlwind tour to different parts of Kolhan, Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Sunday promised to make Chakardharpur a different district by February, 2020. Addressing the Kolhan leg of Johar Jan Ashirwad Yatra at Chakardharpur, Das said that if voted to power the State Government will carve Charkardharpur as the new district.

Taking a dig at the regional parties, Das said that Jharkhand could not become a separate state in 1993 because of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. It was the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who kept the promise made to Jharkhand and gave a separate statehood status. “Keeping this in mind, I promise that voted to power Chakardharpur will be made a separate district by February 2020.

Targeting the Soren family, Das said that guruji and his son has served as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister but they worked to sell Kolhan’s mineral wealth to other states and countries. They did nothing for the development of the State.

Addressing a public meeting at Goilkera, Raghubar Das said that JMM has forgotten the martyrs. BJP has worked to honour the sons of the soil.

Das announced that on the demand of youths Goilkera-Gudri road will be constructed. For 14 years, development was disrupted in the State due to political instability. But after 2014 there has been a stable and strong government.

Das said that his Government has brought the State on the path of development during his five tenure of Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He went on to add that the people of Jharkhand will vote on the basis of his performance and he is confident to win in the elections.

The Chief Minister noted that the party’s vision is making Jharkhand a developed state. “We are promoting agriculture and industry together. We want to build basic infrastructure in the state apart from improved health-care facilities,” said Das.

The Chief Minister said that the state was making steady progress in making it one of the vibrant states in the field of industrial development. “Jharkhand government has framed policies to provide technical education and skill development. We have to just ensure that these policies are implemented. The need is to bridge the skill gap between the industry and the skill provider,” he said.

“We will ensure that mineral-abundant Jharkhand develops as number one state of the country,” he said. Das said the government is working efficiently in bringing speedy development, providing basic amenities and improving policing. He also said that ensuring corruption free governance has been his foremost priority.

But, the national meet had action aplenty on its last day. As on Friday, Sunday belonged to Odisha’s star sprinter Dutee Chand. Dutee, 23, who created a new national 100m sprint record at 11.22 seconds on Friday, was in her element on Sunday in the 200m sprint. She stormed to the finish at 23.17 seconds, leaving behind Archana Suseendran of Tamil Nadu and Chandralekha Anandhan of the Railways.

Abhinav Panwar of Delhi raced to gold in the men’s 200m (21.37 seconds), ahead of Karre Ashok from Services and M. Manikanda Arumugam M. of the Railways.

Chitra Palakeez Unnikrish of Railways grabbed the women’s 800m gold by breasting the tape in 2.04.59 seconds, breezing past teammate Shipra Sarkar and Pramila Yadav of Uttar Pradesh. Among men, Md Afzal P. of Services clocked 1:50.88 seconds in the 800m race to win it over teammate Ankesh Chaudhary and Tamil Nadu’s Mujamil Ameet.

Rekha Singh of Delhi topped the women’s hammer throw with a 56.38m hurl, as did Taranveer Singh Bains of Services in men’s with a 68.49m hurl. Women’s high jump saw Rubina Yadav of the Railways leap 1.76m. In the men’s long jump, Sreeshankar M. of Kerala won gold with a 7.93m leap.

Farmers from Bengal reap Jharkhand Durga Puja harvest

Deepak Jana belongs to a family of farmers in Contai of Bengal’s East Midnapore district but he is more interested in working as a pandal decorator because it pays the 30-year-old more than what he earns from farming and also gives him the pleasure of being an ace craftsman.

Most artisans from East and West Midnapore earn Rs 300 to Rs 400 per eight hours of work in giving shape to Durga Puja pandals in Jamshedpur and other parts of Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar. More than 2,000 workers from the two Bengal districts come to the steel city during the festive season.

According to members of Jamshedpur Durga Puja Kendriya Samiti, there are about 50 big-budget Puja committees known for spending huge amounts on pandal decoration. In the steel city, almost all high-budget, well-known pandals are made by Midnapore-based tent houses and decorators; most of them are farmers who swap their profession in search of creative satisfaction and some quick money in the festive season. Competition among the committees has led for demand for the best decorators from the twin districts, considered hubs of decorators in general and pandal makers in particular.

“Most of the workers who come work under contractors are farmers,” said Deepak, who has done the pandal for Central Sarbajanin Durga Puja in Sonari as a part of Basanti Decorators from Contai. “My family grows vegetables and pulses in Contai but I travel for pandal making because it is good money and also I love the creative part. Once the deal is finalised between the puja committee and the decorator, they hire us for the work. I went to Odisha last year. I think what committees like is the skill that we possess but that comes with practice.”

Sabyasachi Jana, the concept designer of Parbati Decorators from Mecheda, East Midnapore, is the lead designer of the Durga Puja of the Jairam Youth Sporting Club in Adityapur that has this year showcased how manmade pollution is the cause of humankind’s own devastation. The Telegraph had reported on Friday how the pandal has attracted eyeballs and criticism in equal measure because it is made up of a million plastic bags.

“We have over 1,200 tent houses in East Midnapore only who are always busy in work across the eastern part of the country,” Sabyasachi said. “Most of the workers are farmers but due to low income, a huge number of people have turned to this profession which makes you skilled and gives you easy money in a couple of months.”

Most pandal decorators have teams that include masons, carpenters, electricians and painters to take care of various facets of pandal making such as building the structure, covering it with cloth, artwork, painting, and lighting. Most pandal makers are self-taught or learn the skills by working as apprentices for others.

But why not Jharkhand-based decorators?

“There are a couple of reasons,” said Arun Singh, secretary of Jamshedpur Durga Puja Kendriya Samiti. “First, you don’t find craftsmen of that calibre in Jharkhand. Second, we have found a lack of professionalism here and thus committees have to depend on an alternative way which is better even if it is some times expensive. This is not just the case of decorators but also with dhakis who come from Bengal.”

There is some work that does go to local decorators. For instance, the Utkal Durga Puja Committee in Kadma, which has India’s Moon mission as its theme, divided the work between a local decorator and one from Contai.

“The primary ply work was done by 20 craftsmen from Contai because they are the ones who can do it best,” said Siphon Mohanty, vice president of Utkal Durga Puja Committee, Kadma. “They are skilled and are known for their work. It is not only Jamshedpur but these decorators from Midnapore cater to the entire Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha too. Some even go to Calcutta because of their work.”

Asaduddin Owaisi announces his party AIMIM will contest assembly polls in Jharkhand

All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party headed by parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday announced to contest the upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand even as holding its maiden public rally in state capital Ranchi.

Though the party didn’t announce its exact plan as to whether it would contest on all seats or foment an alliance with other parties but its leaders expressed hope that the party would win 10-12 seats in Jharkhand polls.

“If a non-BJP government is formed after the elections, then AIMIM will be one of the four legs of the chief minister’s chair,” they said.

Addressing a public gathering amid downpours at Bariatu, party’s chief Owaisi said, “AIMIM is a real political alternative for the oppressed people of Jharkhand. We are no more going to beg for crumbs. We have to fight for justice. Erase the terror of Modi-RSS from your heart.”

He added, “AIMIM will field its candidates in the upcoming Jharkhand polls. Names of candidates will be announced very soon. The next Jharkhand assembly will also have AIMIM legislators who will espouse the cause of Muslims, Tribal, Christians, poor and downtrodden.”

Appealing the party works to start preparing for the polls, Owaisi slammed the ruling BJP and opposition parties including JMM, Congress and others for using poor and downtrodden as vote bank.

He said, “Congress and JMM never cared for Muslims, Tribal, Christians and oppressed people. They use them as vote bank only.”

Adiwasi Sarna Samiti President Ajay Tirkey, party’s Jharkhand president Hubban Mallick and many Muslim leaders across the state and other states also attended the public rally.

Owaisi, who met the family members of alleged mob lynching victim Tabrez Ansari in Ranchi, slammed the ruling BJP government for its utter failure in controlling these crimes.

He said, “18 women had been lynched in Jharkhand for practising witchcraft. I want to ask the ruling BJP what is going on in this state in its rule. Is this a respect towards woman. The government completely failed in curbing this social evil.”

Highlighting the incidents of mob lynching in Jharkhand, Owaisi said, “The state has turned into a factory of mob lynching. But I want to assure sisters Anita Minz, Shahista Parveen and many others, who lost their husbands in mob lynching violence, that our party is standing firm with you to help you out and raise your concern.”

Hyderabad MP Owaisi also raised concern over delinking of internet and cell phone services in the state of Jammu Kashmir after the union government scrapped Article 370 to strip the state of its special status.

He said, “Kashmir is an integral part of India and will remain like that. However, the government should restore internet and cell phone services to people of Kashmir as it says that the situation in the state is normal.”

Women Anganwadi Workers Beaten Up By Policemen in Jharkhand

On 24 September, many protesting Anganwadi Sevika Sahayaka Sangh workers were beaten up in Jharkhand’s Ranchi by the police on the 40th consecutive day of their protest.

The protest was organised close to the Raj Bhavan in Jharkhand’s Ranchi. In a video of the incident one cannot see the presence of female police officials. A policeman can be seen punching a woman on her right arm after he kept beating her with a lathi.

The workers have been on a hunger strike for 12 days.

WHAT WERE THEIR DEMANDS?

1. Anganwadi workers should be declared government workers. Till then the sevikas should be paid Rs 18,000 and sahayakas should be paid Rs 9,000.

2. Mini anganwadi sevikas should be treated the same way anganwadi sisters are treated.

3. To end the practice of an upper age limit while granting promotions to the anganwadi workers.

4. Anganwadi workers should be given social security benefits.

5. Retirement age of workers should be increased to 65 from 60 years, like was done by the Bihar government. At retirement sevikas should be given Rs 5 lakh and sahayakas should be given Rs 3 lakh.

Jharkhand ATS nabs Al Qaeda suspect from railway station in Jamshedpur

Jharkhand police’s anti-terrorist squad (ATS) has arrested suspected Al Qaeda in Indian Sub-continent (AQIS) terrorist Kalimuddin Mujahiri, who had been absconding for more than three years, officials said in Ranchi on Sunday.

The most wanted terror suspect, a madrasa owner, was picked up by a special team of ATS from Tatanagar railway station in Jamshedpur late on Saturday night and rushed to Ranchi.

“He has been changing locations and appearances continuously to dodge the police. We had formed special teams which have been keeping an eye on him and tracing his possible locations,” Murari Lal Meena, additional director general of police (ADGP, operation), said while speaking to HT.

“As soon as we got a tip-off that Kalimuddin had come to his home in Azad Nagar, Jamshedpur, our team arrested him from Tatanagar station last night,” Meena said.

“He was absconding for the last three years and this (his arrest) will help us in cracking the AQIS network in Jharkhand and also other parts of the country,” he added.

Kalimuddin and his son Huzaifa were believed to have fled to Bangladesh or Nepal after being released by Jamshedpur city police in 2016. They were released after some local leaders in Mango area of the city assured the police that they will produce them in a police station whenever required.

“Kalimuddin has been visiting Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and South Africa apart from brainwashing youths and mobilising them to join AQIS in Jharkhand, Asansol, Kolkata, Gujarat, Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh,” Meena said.

“He has close links with arrested AQIS top recruiters Abdul Rahman Ali Khan Katki alias Haider alias Masood and Jamshedpur-based Abdul Sami alias Ujjair alias Hassan. Katki always stayed in Kalimuddin’s home or madrasa and used it as a hideout often,” he said.

Katki was arrested by Delhi Police’s special cell from Odisha’s Cuttack in December 2015 and Sami from Nuh in Haryana in January the next year.

Syed Md Zeeshan Ali Haider, also from Mango, was arrested in Delhi on August 10, 2017, after being deported from Saudi Arabia. His brother Syed Md Arshian Ali is believed to have joined ISIS in Syria.

Katki, Sami and Zeeshan are lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi.

Kalim is the ninth in the list of suspected AQIS operators in India and fourth from Jharkhand against whom proclaimed absconder order was issued by the courts so far.

ATS sources said another wanted terrorist Abu Sufiyan from Chatra has been traceless for long and believed to have been in jail in Syria after allegedly joining ISIS.

Kalimuddin’s son Huzaifa also studied at Katki’s madrasa near Cuttack where ATS and Delhi Police special cell claimed that host of young men from Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal were brainwashed to join AQIS.

ATS had attached the property and belongings of Kalimuddin in September 2017 in Azad Nagar and his madrasa Jamia Mohammad Bin Abdullah Madrassa where AQIS chief operator Katki used to stay during his city visits since 2001.

The court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) in Jamshedpur had issued the proclamation order declaring Kalimuddin a proclaimed absconder on September 23, 2016, under section 82 of criminal procedure code (CrPc) on a plea by Jharkhand ATS.

Earlier, a special designated court in Delhi had issued the proclaimed absconder order against eight suspected AQIS terrorists, including three from Jharkhand. Zeeshan, Arshian Ali and Abu Sufiyan from Misraul under Tandwa police station in Charta district of the state were among them.

Two more operators Ahmad Masood Akram alias Monu and Raju alias Naseem Akhtar are currently in Ghaghidih jail.

Jharkhand’s director general of police (DGP) Kamal Nayan Choubey congratulated ATS superintendent of police A Vijaya Laxmi and her team for successfully tracing and arresting Kalimuddin.

“This has reiterated the relevance of our ATS and STF and their penetration in carrying out their challenging jobs. This success will go on to help us break the terrorist network in Jharkhand and elsewhere,” said Choubey in his message.

Jharkhand: Villagers blame Bajrang Dal workers for Khunti lynching

Atribal man was beaten to death by angry villagers in Jharkhand over suspicion of selling beef. Two other men injured in the mob attack are now stable.

Speaking to India Today TV, locals from Suari village under Karra PS of Khunti district expressed shock and grief over the death of Kalantus Barla. Villagers claimed that workers from Bajrang Dal were behind the attack.

Police, however, have arrested some people from adjacent Jaltanda village on the basis of suspicion.

It all started when word spread that the three tribal men–Kalantus Barla, Philip Horo and Phagu Kachchap–were selling beef. As soon as the news spread, several workers of Bajrang Dal came to the spot and beat the three men, villagers added.

They were brutally thrashed with sticks following which Barla succumbed to his injuries and the two others are receiving treatment at separate hospitals.

Women from Suari village who spoke to India Today TV said they are upset with yesterday’s incident and vowed not to allow anyone from outside to enter the village.

The women added that they were performing a traditional ‘badgadi puja’ that involves the slaughtering of an animal and distribution of meat. It is performed every year in the village, the women added.

Expressing sorrow over Barla’s death, they indicated that he was not at fault and had only come to his sister’s place to participate in the puja. Barla was specially-abled and could not even run away, they added.

Philip Horo, who lost his wife around eight days ago, has no one to look after his old mother back home. Meanwhile, women from Hindu-dominated Jaltanda village are equally scared after the incident.

Speaking to India Today TV, they accused Bajrang Dal workers of being responsible for the mob attack, but are in fear after some of their relatives were picked up by police in connection with the lynching.

An uneasy calm prevails in the area as this is the first time when the two villages have been involved in such an incident over the past 100 years.

While police have arrested a few people on the basis of suspicion, investigations are underway to track all the perpetrators. Police officers investigating the case said nobody is allowed to take law in their hands and strict action will be taken against the perpetrators.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat visited RIMIS to meet one of the injured victims and termed Jharkhand as “lynchistan”.

Earlier in June, a 24-year-old man in Jharkhand’s Saraikela-Kharasawan, Tabrez Ansari, suffered a similar fate when he was beaten with rods after being tied to a pole for hours on suspicion of theft.

A man was lynched and two others were injured on Sunday by a Jharkhand mob that accused them of cow slaughter.

Police sources said a crowd had attacked Kalantus Barla, Philip Horo and Phagu Kachchap in Jaltand Suari village, Khunti district, after word spread that the trio had been seen chopping meat, with the remains of a cow strewn around them.

Cow slaughter and beef sale are banned in Jharkhand, which has emerged as a lynching hotbed, accounting for 17 of the 44 deaths the country witnessed at the hands of mobs between May 2015 and December 2018. Most of the lynchings in the state were related to suspected cow slaughter or beef possession.

“As soon as the local police learnt about the attack, they rushed to the spot and rescued the trio. They were brought to the local hospital, from where they were sent to RIMS, Ranchi,” an officer in Khunti said.

“Seven people have been detained for questioning. An FIR will be lodged,” A.V. Homkar, deputy inspector-general of police, South Chhotanagpur, said.

He added: “Preliminary investigation suggests the three men were selling prohibited meat. They were caught by the mob and thrashed. Additional police forces have been deployed.”

Vivek Kashyap, RIMS superintendent, said Barla, 38, had been dead on arrival and that the post-mortem report would establish the cause of death. He said both Horo and Kachchap had multiple injuries, without elaborating.

Khunti police sources said the village was tense.

The lynching trend has continued in Jharkhand this year, with a mob killing Tabrez Ansari, 24, on suspicion of theft at Dhatkidih village in Seraikela in June.

Footage suggests the mob forced him to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Hanuman”.

The police, who recently filed the chargesheet in the case, have reinstated the murder charges against the 13 accused after having dropped them.

Jharkhand Government to appoint 110 senior residents in 5 medical colleges in 4 days

In order to fulfil its undertaking to Medical Council of India (MCI), state government would appoint 110 senior residents (SR)/tutors on vacant posts of different departments in all five medical colleges through walk-in interviews within four days.

Deputy secretary health, medical education and family welfare department of government Abhishek Srivastava on Saturday issued a vacancy notice for appointment of senior residents and tutors in all five medical colleges including Patliputra Medical College Hospital (PMCH) Dhanbad and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur.

Last month (August) on directive of Supreme Court, Jharkhand government had given undertaking to MCI to compliance faculty deficiencies in three months in newly set up its three medical colleges, Hazaribagh, Palamu and Dumka to start teaching from current session.

State’s all medical colleges including PMCH and MGMMCH are reeling under shortage of senior residents and Tutors. At PMCH, only 36 are working against sanctioned posts of 70 while at MGMMCH only 44 are deployed against sanctioned posts of 97.

“Since classes have been started, 110 senior residents/tutors would be appointed this month to cater the requirements. A two-day walk-in interview has been called at IPH Institute, RCH campus Ranchi on September 25 and 26”, said deputy secretary Srivastava.

On first day (September 25) they would be appointed in faculties of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, medicine, TB and Chest, pediatrics, surgery, orthopedic, ENT, eye, gynecology. On second day (September 26) doctors for microbiology, FMT, Pharmacology, PSM, radiology, radiotherapy, anesthesia, skin, Psychiatric and physical medicine and rehabilitation would be selected.

Highest number of doctors (11) would be selected for biochemistry department followed by 10 each in physiology and anatomy. Besides this, eight doctors would be selected for radiology department and 7 in anesthesia.

“Senior residents are being appointed for three years on a fixed honorarium of Rs 60,000 per month and their job would be spontaneously terminated after completion of tenure as per the health service rules of Jharkhand government”, said deputy secretary.
